Do you know what the best homemade treatment for your hair is? We’re all different, and our hair needs are also different. Lucky for you, I’ve done the research and figured out which one you should try based on your needs.
What Are Hair Treatments?
Hair treatments serve as deep conditioning treatments that help heal damaged hair. They’re beneficial to men and women of all ages (and ethnicities) and even kids!
You need a hair treatment if your hair is:
- Dry
- Frizzy
- Brittle
- Thinning
- Dull
Does A Homemade Hair Treatment Work?
Hair treatments soften, hydrate, promote growth and add shine to hair. A deep conditioning treatment will relax the cuticle and help the cells to lie flat, making dry hair look smoother and shinier. They even treat hair and scalp conditions.
Most of these homemade hair treatments have vitamins A, E, and biotin, which have been shown to help hair grow (1)
Because these treatments are so good, you can get a lot out of just one use. One of my great tips for saving money on your wedding day is to do a homemade hair treatment the night before.
Are Salon Hair Treatments Worth It?
Overexposure to heat and chemical treatments often causes damaged hair.
How often Should I Do a Hair Treatment?
You can incorporate a hair treatment into your weekly routine to restore hair health. Once a month as maintenance
They’re ideal for pamper parties or girls’ nights in. Especially if combined with 5 of the best body scrubs that can be used for mani’s and pedi’s. There’s nothing quite like a spa day with the girls, right?

- Vanilla
When compared to salon grade products, their effect is as good (if not better) and at a fraction of the price!
Furthermore, they look so delicious and smell so delicious you’ll want to eat them!
Natural Hair Treatments for Hair Growth
Creme brûlée hair treatment
There’s nothing quite like the sensational aroma of creme brûlée. Tones of vanilla combined with cream and egg for a luxurious once-a-month treatment.
Ingredients
- 1X Whole Egg
- 150 ml Coconut Milk
- 2 TBSP Honey
- Vanilla Essence
Benefit
Hair growth
Eggs contain nutrients that can speed up hair growth. They include vitamin A and E, biotin, omega 3 and folate.
Coconut milk has proteins (and other essential nutrients) to boost hair follicle growth.
Moisturises:
A healthy egg yolk is rich in fats and proteins and is naturally moisturizing.
Honey is a humectant which means that it attracts moisture. It’s known for sealing moisture into the hair and strengthening the hair follicles.
Removes build up
Egg white has bacteria-eating enzymes, removes unwanted build up and oil.
Vanilla Essence will add shine and help hair grow in a healthy way by getting rid of toxins that buildup. The smell is also heavenly!
Directions For Use:
Mix all the ingredients together, then rub them into dry hair from the roots to the ends.
Cover your hair with plastic wrap in a towel and leave on for 1-3 hours.
Make sure the water you use to rinse your hair isn’t too hot. First of all, it’s not healthy for your hair, and second, you don’t want scrambled eggs!
Hair Treatments for Damaged Hair
Panna Cotta Hair Mask
Classic Panna Cotta is rich and silky and takes only minutes to make. It’s the perfect light treat, and now for your hair too!
Ingredients:
- 150mls Yoghurt
- 1 TBSP Coconut Oil
- 1 TBSP Honey
- 10g Gelatin Powder
When the yoghurt and coconut oil in this recipe mix together, they create a silky texture. After adding gelatin and honey, you’ll have the perfect hair dessert.
Benefits:
Gets rid of build-up:
The lactic acid in yogurt removes dirt and dead skin while the milk fat keeps the hair follicles moist.
Intensely moisturizes:
Coconut milk is full of fatty acids and vitamin E, which deeply condition the hair and make it feel soft and silky.
Thickens hair:
Gelatin nourishes the entire hair strand, adhering to damaged areas especially well. Since it acts as a thickening agent, it will also add texture and volume to hair at once.
Directions For Use:
- Melt the gelatin in some warm/hot water.
Blend all the other ingredients together and then mix in the melted gelatin. - Lather into dry, brushed hair from roots to tips and leave in for about 1-3 hours. If left to set, warm up the mixture again to help with spreadability.
- Wash out under lukewarm water and then shampoo and condition for maximum results.
Hair Treatments for Dry or frizzy Hair
Chocolate Mousse Hair Mask
This hair mask is ideal for brunettes or darker hair tones. When mixed with avocado, cocoa powder brings out the rich brown tones in hair. Without the cocoa, it still gives hair an amazing shine. So, for people with lighter hair or blondes, take the cocoa powder out of the recipe.
Ingredients:
- Half an Avocado
- 1 Tbsp Cocoa Powder
- 1 Tbsp Olive oil
- 2 Tbsp Honey
You won’t want to give this mask a miss. Repeat mask every six weeks for improved results.
Benefits:
Treats dry scalp conditions
Avocados stimulate collagen and elastin production.
Cocoa is full of proteins and antioxidants that help your hair grow longer and stronger.
Calms frizz and helps with shine
Use cocoa powder in a hair mask or treatment for rich dark tones, while adding moisture, shine and volume.
Avocado is full of things that help smooth and calm frizzy hair. It has antioxidants, essential fatty acids, biotin, and vitamins A and E.
Reduces split ends
Olive oil has been used to condition hair for hundreds of years. Its natural anti-inflammatory properties soothe an itchy scalp and lessen the damage that hair care products can do. It makes your hair soft, smooth, and shiny by locking in moisture and stopping the scalp from getting dry.
Directions For Use:
- Mix all the ingredients together, rub them into dry, brushed hair from the roots to the ends.
- Let the treatment sit for 1 to 3 hours.
- Wash out under lukewarm water and then shampoo and condition for best results.
- Make sure you cover your head in a towel or plastic bag to prevent the mousse from spreading everywhere.
Because cocoa powder is dark, it’s often used to color and darken hair. Because of this, people with blonde or lighter hair should leave out the cocoa powder.
Homemade Hair Treatment for Black Hair
Banana Cream Hair Mask
The sugar part of this homemade hair mask recipe helps exfoliate the scalp. It dissolves and rinses out without leaving any residue on your hair.
Give your scalp a gentle scrub once every 6 weeks to rid dead skin cells and make way for healthier, glowing skin.
Ingredients:
- 1 Ripe Banana
- 1 Tbsp Olive Oil
- 1 Tbsp Coconut Oil
- Brown Sugar
Benefits:
Lustrous, healthy hair.
As we all know, exfoliation is the cornerstone of a gorgeous complexion (as seen in my post on 5 Best Body Scrubs).
Dull hair, clogged follicles, and itchy, flaky skin can come from too little exfoliation. Hair can be affected by the health of your scalp. The brown sugar in this hair treatment helps get rid of clogged dirt and boosts blood flow to the hair follicles.
Manageability and shine.
Bananas keep your scalp moist and help prevent and get rid of dandruff. They have potassium, natural oils, and vitamins to soften and protect hair’s elasticity, reducing split ends.
Directions For Use:
- You can use a blender, mixer, or just a fork to mash the banana and mix it with the rest of the ingredients.
- Massage into dry, brushed hair from roots to tips and leave in for about 1-3 hours.
- Wash out under lukewarm water and then shampoo and condition for optimal results.
- Make sure you cover your head in a towel or plastic bag to prevent the mask from spilling everywhere.
Homemade Hair Treatment Hot Oil
Because coconut oil is made up of short and medium-chain fatty acids, it penetrates hair faster and deeper than other conditioners.
Lauric acid, found in coconut oil, also makes it easier for the oil to absorb into the hair shaft. This makes coconut oil the most effective hair oil for preventing protein loss from the sun or chemicals.
Coconut oil is the answer if you want your hair to be deeply moisturized, grow faster, or even be free of dandruff.
The Best Homemade Hair Treatment
Egg Nog Hair Treatment
Ingredients:
- 1X Whole Egg
- Olive oil
- Coconut milk.
- Honey
As we’ve already said in the other recipes, olive oil is a natural conditioner that has been used for a very long time. It provides deep conditioning, especially for dry hair and scalps.
Olive oil also locks in moisture and keeps your scalp from getting dry, so your hair stays smooth and silky.
Directions For Use:
- Mix ingredients together using a blender or mixer.
- Massage into dry, brushed hair from roots to tips and leave in for about 1-3 hours.
- Wash out under lukewarm water and then lightly shampoo and condition.
- Make sure you cover your head properly with a towel or plastic bag to prevent the mask from smearing everywhere.
- You might find that one wash is not enough to get the oil out of your hair, if that’s the case wash a second time for better results.
Even though you don’t notice the egg smell when you first put the mask on (thanks to the vanilla extract), it tends to get stronger the longer you leave it on. However, the smell eventually fades away when you wash the mask off.
Instant Hair Treatment Hack
Not everyone has 1-3 hours to sit with a hair treatment on, so if you’re one of those people and need a quick fix, I have one for you.
Put a small amount of coconut oil in the palm of your hand and rub the bristle tips of your brush into your hand. Once the oil is on the brush bristles, brush your hair starting with the bottom layers and working your way up.
Don’t start at the top of your head or put the oil on your hair directly with your hands. Instead, use the brush.
Your hair will shine and have less frizz or flyaway hairs that stick out.
Adding some olive or coconut oil to your shampoo and massaging it in as you wash your hair is another great idea.
